The human rights record of Syria: A state of emergency has been in effect since 1963 and it gives “security forces sweeping powers of arrest and detention,” according to Amnesty International. Syria is a one-party state without free elections and “freedom of expression and association remain strictly controlled.” In 2009 “hundreds of people were arrested and hundreds of others remained imprisoned for political reasons”. Military Police were reported to have killed at least 17 detainees. Human rights defenders have been harassed and persecuted. Women and minorities face discrimination. According to Human Rights Watch, as of 2009 Syria’s poor human rights situation had “deteriorated further”. Authorities arrested political and human rights activists, censored websites, detained bloggers, and imposed travel bans. Syria’s multiple security agencies continue to detain people without arrest warrants. No political parities were licensed and emergency rule, imposed in 1963, remained in effect. Amnesty International reports, “members of the Kurdish minority faced discrimination; many were effectively stateless and denied equal access to social and economic rights. Women were subject to discrimination and gender-based violence. Sixteen civilians were killed in a bomb explosion which state media attributed to an armed group. the Syrian government’s “respect for human rights worsened”. COPENHAGEN, Denmark — Freedom of speech around the world has been a hallmark of Christian civilization, but today there is less and less freedom to criticize Islam. In Denmark, a 15-year-old Danish boy faces prison time for distributing leaflets warning that the country could someday become a Muslim nation and that he thinks that is a bad thing. A Danish prosecutor called the leaflets “hate speech.” Yet, across the water in Sweden, it was not hate speech when a leading national newspaper printed an article a few weeks ago claiming that Israeli soldiers harvest and sell organs from dead Palestinians. Some say that claim amounts to the anti-Semitic Jewish blood libel, that Jews commit human sacrifice on non-Jews. The Swedish government, which defended the newspaper, said it was free speech. Welcome to Europe, where many say the difference between free speech and hate speech is dictated by left-wing political correctness and fear of Islam. “Free speech is coming under increasing pressure by the day,” Lars Hedegaard, head of the International Free Press Society, told CBN News. It does not matter if the criticism is factual. For instance, Islam teaches that when Mohammed was 52, he consummated his marriage to a 9-year-old girl. There are plenty of people who truly believe that Obama’s socialist ideas are a wonderful thing for our country. I would submit that although they feel good from a symbolic perspective, the reality is far different from the sales pitch. The most wonderful idea our country ever came up with was the idea that our rights came from God, not government. The idea that liberty and freedom reigned supreme. The idea that you can do anything you want so long as you don’t hurt other people or their property.

North Korean defector Kang Chol-hwan talks about the dismal situation in his native country that is unlike anywhere else on the planet. At the age of nine, Kang was sentenced to ten years in a gulag for the supposed crimes of his grandfather. He spent his childhood in Yodok — a prison the size of Washington, DC. North Korean prison camps, based on Nazi models like Auschwitz, are so common and their effects so wide-reaching that they are generally accepted by average citizens, as are public executions, which most North Koreans have witnessed. The entire country is like one gigantic prison; it is the only starving country in the world with perfectly good natural resources. Though an enormous supply of money and food have been supplied by the South Korean government and various international aid organizations, most of it has been confiscated to feed the People’s Army — the fourth largest standing army in the world. An exorbitant amount of money is also squandered by Kim John-Il on monuments, extravagant homes, and nuclear arms, rather than lifting his people out of abject poverty and starvation.
