Heritage Minister James Moore has instructed Library and Archives Canada to reschedule a screening of a controversial film on Iran that was cancelled Tuesday after complaints and threats. Moore said a new time and date would be announced soon and sent a note on the social messaging service Twitter saying “The show will go on.” The national library cancelled the screening of Iranium, a film critical of Iran’s leadership and nuclear program, after a spokesperson said it had received complaints from the public and threats. Ottawa police also launched an investigation Tuesday evening after they said a man showed up and dropped off a plastic bag with two envelopes inside the library building and then fled the area. Police found white powder inside the bag, but it turned out to be harmless. Library spokesperson Pauline Portelance said the decision to cancel the screening was made to ensure the safety of the public and staff and to ensure the protection of the archives themselves. “We received a series of threats and complaints from the public, varying members of the public, significant enough to warrant cancelling the event,” said Portelance. Fred Litwin, who organized the screening through the Free Thinking Film Society of Ottawa, said library officials had talked about pulling the film as late as Monday but early Tuesday gave him the OK to screen it.
