Belisario Betancur, former president of Colombia, left his career in government 25 years ago and dedicated himself to improving education and building stronger communities throughout his country. But over the course of his life, one thing remained constant: he has always been “obsessed with peace.” He was the first Colombian president to negotiate with guerilla movements, bringing the FARC and M-19 into mainstream government and teaching them to use nonviolent methods to promote their message. He strongly believes that negotiation can be possible even with radical groups. He stresses that an open society must embrace different points of view, so in his opinion it is crucial to bring many types of groups into the political discourse. With this mentality, Betancur worked to further his cause, founding the Grupo de Contadora por la Paz, a multilateral agreement seeking peace in Latin America. His legacy of negotiation and cooperation will live on long after him—a vital contribution, since peace is the precursor for both economic development and the universal enjoyment of human rights.

June 26 is the anniversary of a shootout that erupted between the FBI and the residents of the Pine Ridge reservation in South Dakota. This incident led to the conviction of Native American activist Leonard Peltier, who 36 years later is still in prison. To the FBI he is the murderer of two of their agents, but to the Dalai Lama and the late Mother Teresa he is a political prisoner. Peltier, who is in his 60s, has spent more than three decades in prison, has diabetes, is partially blind and has suffered a stroke. Iranian lawyer and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Shirin Ebadi has years of experience resisting the oppressive government of Iran and trying to promote freedom of expression in her country. She begins her talk by praising the virtues of freedom of thought and expression–the freedom on which everything else depends. In a secular society, religious people should be able to speak. In a religious society, secular people should be able to speak. In a socialist society, capitalists should be able to speak. In a capitalist society, socialists should be able to speak. Ebadi then points out that according to Article 20 of the UN Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, any kind of speech that incites discrimination or violence is outlawed. In Ebadi’s legal opinion of Article 20, the majority cannot release humiliating statements about a minority group, but minorities are free to criticize the prevalent opinion. In Iran, minorities have no such power—it is illegal to criticize the constitution, the government blocks all websites that support women’s rights, and the broadcasts of television channels like BBC and Voice of America are jammed. The outside world cannot look on passively as this repression continues; Ebadi tells people living in free societies to use their voices to bring liberty to others and to always remember that “the fate of humanity is intertwined.”
