US police have arrested several Occupy protesters in the cities of Oakland and Charlotte. Anti-corporate activists say six Oaklanders were arrested while staging a march to highlight police abuse and harassment. The rally was planned to be staged from Frank Ogawa Plaza outside City Hall to the Oakland Police Department. Protesters say police failed to give a dispersal order before chasing and beating them. Police also reportedly fired rubber bullets to disperse the protesters. Meanwhile, two demonstrators have been arrested in Charlotte. The incident comes at the time after a group called “Walkupy” arrived in the city after walking over a month on foot from Washington DC. The group plans to end its march in Atlanta later this month. Press TV has conducted an interview with Mark Mason, an Occupy movement protester in Oakland, to shed more light on the issue. What follows is the transcription of the interview: Press TV: A lot of action has been taking place in Oakland as more members of your leg of the occupy movement have been arrested. Tell us more about the arrests and claims of police brutality against the peaceful demonstrators. For my Documenting Social Injustice class, I covered the Occupy Chicago protests this week being held at Lasalle and Jackson streets. People of all ages and types are gathering in the downtown financial district, in front the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago, The Chicago Board of Trade and Bank of America building. They have been there for 13 days and plan to continue the protest through December. The protests began in the middle east and have quickly spread across the globe. Protests and marches are being held in many US cities such as New York, Miami, Los Angeles and Philadelphia. On their website in the ‘About Us’ section, it says, “We are Chicagoans, and most importantly, Americans, gathered together in solidarity to exercise our Constitution-guaranteed rights of free speech and to peacefully assemble. Occupy Chicago is here to fight corporate abuse of American democracy in solidarity with our brothers and sisters around the world.” The people who represent Occupy Chicago are “students, teachers, union workers, men, women, children, etc. They are protesting against many social problems including the state of the country, the gap between rich and poor, the healthcare system, big corporations, corporate greed, the education system, Wall Street and wars against terror.” Hundreds have gathered in Chicago from all over. Every night they continue to grow in numbers.
