The following presentation, originally released in 1968 as a filmstrip, was written and narrated by the late Ezra Taft Benson. He is best remembered for his distinguished career in government and his extensive religious service. Starting in 1953, he served eight years as US Secretary of Agriculture in the Eisenhower administration and was widely recognized as a staunch anti-Communist. As Secretary, he worked to reverse the wartime increase in government control over farming, winning significant legislative victories despite intense political opposition. Mr. Benson and Robert Welch, Founder of The John Birch Society later become good friends. Man, Freedom and Government is a classic presentation on the proper role of government. Mr. Benson narrates this video. www.JBS.org http

There are three principles that must be attained and maintained in order for personal freedom to survive in any country. The first two are all but lost in this country.
Each time a man stands up for an ideal, or acts to improve the lot of others, or strikes out against injustice, he sends forth a tiny ripple of hope… and crossing each other from a million different centers of energy and daring those ripples build a current that can sweep down the mightiest walls of oppression and resistance. ~Robert F. Kennedy

Leopoldo López tells us how Venezuela has become one of the poorest and most dangerous countries in the world. Today, 57% of Venezuelans live in poverty and 27% live in extreme poverty. Venezuela is currently the most violent country in the Americas by far. It has a per capita muder rate three times as high as Brazil, three times as high as Mexico, and nearly twice as high as Colombia. Venezuelan jails are the most dangerous in the entire world – 100 times more deadly than Colombian jails and 20 times more deadly than Brazilian jails. These trends have all developed over the past ten years, despite the fact that at the same time the government has gained a tremendous amount of reources as oil prices have risen from a barrel to 0 a barrel. López calls this a failure of leadership – one that sustains poverty, inequality, insecurity, violence, and division. He now presents Venezuelans with an alternative. López was elected mayor of Chacao in 2000 and re-elected in 2004, running on a platform of solving poverty through peace and democracy. In 2008 he had an approval rating of 92%. He then planned to run for Mayor of Caracas – the second most powerful position in the country and a stepping stone to the Venezuelan presidency. Polls indicated he would win 70% of the vote. However, the government would not let him run. He was disqualified without trial. His case is currently pending in the Inter-American Court of Human Rights.
