Noam Chomsky: Necessary Illusions – Thought Control in a Democratic Society Part 3 (1989)

Posted by admin on 4th July 2010

April 11, 1989 www.amazon.com Jeffersonian democracy is the set of political goals that were named after Thomas Jefferson. It dominated American politics in the years 1800-1820s. It is contrasted with Jacksonian democracy, which dominated the next political era. The most prominent spokesmen included Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, Albert Gallatin, John Randolph of Roanoke, and Nathaniel Bacon. Freedom House is a international non-governmental organization based in Washington, DC that conducts research and advocacy on its conceptions of democracy, political freedom and human rights. It publishes an annual report assessing the degree of perceived democratic freedoms in each country, which is used in political science research. The organization was founded by Wendell Willkie and Eleanor Roosevelt in 1941, and describes itself as “a clear voice for democracy and freedom around the world.” The group states “American leadership in international affairs is essential to the cause of human rights and freedom” and that this can primarily be achieved through the group’s “analysis, advocacy, and action.” Freedom House receives about 66% of its budget from the US government, but also receives funding from various other sources, for example the Bradley Foundation, the Smith Richardson Foundation, the Dutch government, the Nicholas B. Ottaway Foundation, the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, the John S. & James L. Knight Foundation, the John Hurford Foundation, and a list

Noam Chomsky on Media, Violence, Freedom of Speech, and Republicans (1993 – Part 5)

Posted by admin on 4th July 2010

December 10, 1993 www.amazon.com Research into the media and violence attempts to determine whether a link between consuming media violence and subsequent aggressive and violent behavior exists. Although some social scientists support this link, methodological and theoretical problems with the existing literature limit interpretation of findings in this area. There is concern among some scholars that media researchers may have exaggerated effects (Ferguson & Kilburn, 2009; Freedman, 2002; Pinker 2002; Savage, 2004). For example, a 2008 editorial in medical journal the Lancet concluded that discussions of media violence effects were exaggerted. There are many explanations of aggressive behavior which do not emphasize the role of the media. For example, some researchers have suggested that the pathway to aggression is largely biological/genetic (see the work of Hare, 1993, Larsson, Andershed, & Lichtenstein, in Press, among others), while others have suggested that aggression can be explained by principles of evolutionary psychology. Complaints about the possible deleterious effects of mass media are nothing new. Plato complained about the effects of plays on youth. Various media/genres, including dime novels, comic books, jazz, rock and roll, role playing/computer games and many others have attracted speculation that consumers of such media may become more aggressive, rebellious or immoral. This has led some scholars to conclude statements made by some researchers merely

Rebiya Kadeer – Oslo Freedom Forum 2010

Posted by admin on 28th June 2010

In the keynote address for the Oslo Freedom Forum 2010, Uyghur leader Rebiya Kadeer reveals the plight of her people under the repressive Chinese government. Like the Tibetans, the Uyghurs are living in an open prison, forced to abandon their culture, subjected to torture, imprisonment, and execution for speaking out. According to Ms. Kadeer, indifference is not an option. At great personal expense, she fights on behalf of mothers whose children are being tortured, wives who are afraid to ask where their husbands are, and a youth that is not allowed to speak its own language. Man, Freedom and Government by Ezra Taft Benson 2 of 3

Posted by admin on 27th June 2010

I give the credit to The John Birch Society. Patriot of the Republic, Mike Fulmer – The following presentation, originally released in 1968 as a filmstrip, was written and narrated by the late Ezra Taft Benson. He is best remembered for his distinguished career in government and his extensive religious service. Starting in 1953, he served eight years as US Secretary of Agriculture in the Eisenhower administration and was widely recognized as a staunch anti-Communist. As Secretary, he worked to reverse the wartime increase in government control over farming, winning significant legislative victories despite intense political opposition. Mr. Benson and Robert Welch, Founder of The John Birch Society later become good friends. Man, Freedom and Government is a classic presentation on the proper role of government. Mr. Benson narrates this video. www.JBS.org http www.trueworldhistory.info
