One particular angle got a lot of coverage Accusations that the Harper Conservatives did not do enough to mark the occasion, apparently because the Charter was the work of the Liberals under Pierre Trudeau. Perhaps. Or perhaps it was because, as Prime Minister Stephen Harper said, that the Charter remains controversial in some quarters, making celebrating its adoption politically tricky. Or maybe it’s more simple than that. Maybe the Tories didn’t see any reason to make a big deal about the Charter because it’s not something that Canadians care about very much. The Tories have, of course, shown themselves willing to celebrate issues that aren’t exactly at the beating heart of the Canadian collective identity — the monarchy and the War of 1812 are examples of that. But they’re at least things that align tightly with the Conservative mindset — traditional values and honouring our past, especially our military history. That the Charter doesn’t come due for the same treatment needn’t necessarily reflect hostility on behalf of the Conservatives, but a frank assessment that they won’t pay a price with the voters (especially Tory voters) for letting the anniversary pass largely unnoticed.
